WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

D2L

Desire2Learn is an interactive website that your instructor can use to help your class work and communicate outside of class time. This workshop will help you get familiar with the D2L site.

In this workshop, you'll learn how to:

  • Log into the D2L website
  • Get into the contents of your courses
  • Open files and attachments
  • Check your grades
  • Send an e-mail to your instructor
  • Print information and attachments
  • Take an online quiz
  • Join an online discussion

E-mail

All students at UW-Fox Valley have their own campus e-mail account. You can either check it on campus, or at home using Outlook Web Access. You can use it for day-to-day e-mail use, but more importantly, it is one of the primary ways of communicating with your instructors. Therefore, you should get to know how to use your e-mail!

In this workshop, you'll learn how to:

  • log into Outlook Web Access
  • read your incoming e-mail
  • create a new e-mail
  • look up e-mail addresses in the e-mail directory
  • attach files to an e-mail
  • print e-mails and attachments
  • delete old messages
  • create a new mail rule

PowerPoint

More and more classes are requiring knowledge and use of Microsoft PowerPoint. In this workshop you'll learn the basics of creating a PowerPoint presentation from scratch, including slide design and presentation.

In this workshop, you'll learn how to:

  • Create a new PowerPoint file, and add new slides
  • Work with text and content placeholders
  • Use the Notes page to create a "script" you can use during presentation
  • Design and layout slides with backgrounds and text/color formatting
  • Import slides from other PowerPoint files
  • Play your show and use ink annotations to mark up slides during your presentation
  • Package your presentation to a CD or folder
  • Print your slide show using different page layouts

Scanning & Image Editing

Whether you want to send a photo by e-mail or for use in a PowerPoint presentation, you need to know how to use a scanner. For this workshop, we'll use the Canon CanoScan LiDE 20 scanners available in the Media Lab.

In this workshop, you'll learn how to:

  • Use Photoshop or other imaging programs to access the scanner
  • Place documents in the scanner properly
  • Set the scanner settings for optimal results
  • Resize or crop scanned images
  • Save as different file formats (JPG, GIF, etc)
  • Attach to e-mail or include in PowerPoint presentations
  • Print to a color laser printer for duplication and blow-ups

Microsoft Windows Procedures (Basic)

Most computers on campus (and likely your own home) are equipped with Microsoft Windows. Before you can do anything like typing a term paper or downloading assignments from the Internet, you should know how to get around inside Windows.

In this workshop, you'll learn how to:

  • Log into the campus network
  • Use a floppy, Zip Disk, or USB Drive
  • Copy and paste text
  • Use your "My Documents" folder
  • Move or copy files from one place to another
  • Print to a printer

Digital Cameras: Still and Video

The workshop covers general operations of both the Nikon Coolpix 5000 still camera and Sony HandyCam video camera.

Podcasting

A podcast is a digital media file, or a series of such files, that is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and/or personal computers. This workshop covers the basic information you need to start podcasting.

In this workshop, you'll learn how to:

  • Operate digital audio recorders
  • Use Basic Recording techniques
  • Manipulate different audio recordings
  • Edit audio recordings digitally with popular audio programs

Video Editing I

In this workshop, you'll learn how to:

  • Navigate the Vegas Video Interface
  • Capture Video from popular types of storage media (Mini-DV, VHS, DVD)
  • Edit captured video using Vegas

Video Editing II

In this workshop, you'll learn how to:

  • Add crossfades & Transitions to your project
  • Add Text and Credits
  • Format for DVD Viewing
  • Format for Web Viewing

DVD Authorizing

In this workshop, you'll learn how to:

  • Navigate the DVD Architect Interface
  • Insert Media into a DVD (Chapter Markers, ect.)
  • Add Buttons, Backgrounds, and Submenus
  • Preview your DVD
  • Burn your DVD

Adobe Acrobat

In this workshop, you'll learn how to:

  • Create Adobe PDF documents from files (Word documents, ect)
  • Create Adobe PDF documents from scanned media
  • Manipulate/edit and touch up PDF documents
  • Insert thumbnails and bookmarks
  • Save and convert PDF documents

Google Tools

In this workshop, you'll learn about the following Google tools:

  • iGoogle
    • Create a personalized google homepage with gadgets and content you like.
  • Blogger
    • A blog is a website that you can post your thoughts, and communicate with other blog users.
  • Google Products
    • A set of free software than can be downloaded to maximize your web browsing / computing experience.
  • Google Pack
    • A common pack of the software mentioned above in google products section.

Picasa

In this workshop, you'll learn how to use Google Picasa:

  • Google Picasa
    • The easy way to find, organize, edit and share your digital photos.
