Season Preview 2008
The Cyclones’ men’s and women’s tennis team will be looking for a quick start from many new faces this year, returning only one member of last year’s team due to graduation. Mike Haertl, last year’s number one singles player for much of the season, will be the incumbent to beat, as well as provide leadership for this year’s crop of freshmen players.
On the men’s team, the Cyclones welcome new players Justin Lecher (Chilton/Chilton High), Jacob Thomack (Hortonville/Hortonville High), and Dwight Veleka (Waupaca/Waupaca High). On the women’s side, all flight rankings are open from last year. New faces include Christina Stevens (Oshkosh/Oshkosh North), and Amanda Vesperman (Deerfield High School).
The team has been practicing in the gym until the snow melts, but will get outside on the courts at the earliest opportunity as spring approaches. Although young, this year’s squad has already demonstrated a great deal of skill, willingness to learn, and commitment to improving their all-around games to make the transition to the college game from high school.
There are still open positions on the team, and new players are welcome at any time. Due to higher numbers this year and the loss of key players at other campuses from the last two seasons, the team will have a much better chance at contending for the championship in Madison at the end of the season.
