Overview

Anthropology at UW-Fox Valley includes a range of introductory courses in the major sub-fields of anthropology (Archaeology, Cultural Anthropology, and Physical Anthropology) plus a series of upper level courses. Upper level course titles include: North American Indians, North American Archaeology, Archaeological Field Methods, and Wisconsin Archaeology/Indians. (Click here to see the description for the Archaeology Field School.)In general, anthropology attempts to answer basic questions about human beings: origins, cultural differences, physical varieties, accomplishments through time, and languages. Through comparative analysis of institutions, in both small scale and large societies of past and present, students are encouraged to understand the phenomena of human life in all its aspects. Anthropologists feel that nothing that is human is foreign to anthropological inquiry. (Click here for An Anthropological Perspective of Ethnicity and Race.)Students wishing to major in anthropology can enroll at UW-Fox Valley and receive a broad and basic anthropological education enabling them to transfer easily into four-year programs elsewhere. Additionally, UW-Fox Valley offers a pre-major program in archaeology that articulates with UW-La Crosse's BS/BA major in archaeological studies. Former anthropology majors from this campus have also successfully completed programs in both undergraduate and graduate training at UW-La Crosse, UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee, Lawrence University, UW-Oshkosh, and institutions outside of Wisconsin (click here for links to Wisconsin universities that offer a major in anthropology).
